What to Expect at Your First Addiction Treatment Visit

Learn what an intake visit can involve, what information helps your clinician, and how an individualized addiction treatment plan is developed.

This article is general educational information and does not replace assessment, diagnosis or medical advice from a healthcare professional. In an emergency, call 911.

The first visit is about understanding your needs

Starting addiction treatment can feel complicated, but the first visit has a practical purpose: helping the clinical team understand what is happening now and what kind of support may be appropriate.

You may be asked about current and past substance use, medications, medical history, previous treatment, withdrawal concerns, and your goals. Sharing accurate information helps the clinician make safer decisions.

A treatment plan is individualized

There is no single treatment plan that fits everyone. After reviewing your situation, a clinician can discuss treatment options, follow-up, and whether medication-assisted treatment is clinically appropriate.

If medication is part of the plan, pharmacy access and ongoing monitoring are important parts of care. TSCP locations combine addiction medicine with onsite pharmacy support to make coordination easier for patients.

Before you travel to a clinic

TSCP has clinics in Etobicoke, Scarborough, North York, and Thornhill. Hours vary by location and by day. The location cards and individual clinic pages show today's schedule and contact information so you can choose the most practical location.

Walk-ins are welcome, but calling before travelling can be helpful when you want to confirm physician availability or ask a specific question.
